Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my childrenโ€™s letters โ€” sometimes very hastily โ€” but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, โ€œDear Jim: I loved your card.โ€ Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, โ€œJim loved your card so much he ate it.โ€ That to me was one of the highest compliments Iโ€™ve ever received. He didnโ€™t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.

I’m giving away my cherished Michael Jordan jersey tonight. I haven’t worn it in years, and I’m sure someone else will love it more.

Before hopefully enriching another’s life, I wanted to document the story of the garment for my own memories. It was Spring Break in my youth and my mother and grandmother had taken my brother and I to Washington, DC. While perusing the city, I spotted this beautiful white Bulls jersey in a window, and since Spring Break closely aligned with my birthday I implored my grandmother to buy it for me. Thanks to the magnificent woman that she is, I have enjoyed my Michael Jordan jersey for nearly half my life.

I wish it well and that another youth finds joy in it whomever they might be.
